Myself and Fozz have discussed promotion (or not taking the option), from the Northern League to the Northern Premier League a few times now.
Obviously we don't know the ins and outs of every club, but I wonder if the needing to be 'financial and stable' line, is too cushy a line to move away from?
Some of the teams put together in the NL, is of a very good standard. However, rather than take on the challenge of promotion, a winning team is often left to stagnate in the NL. The players move on and another team pushes to the fore.
As this is another 'off the cuff' piece, I haven't been able to garnish it with stats and the like. If anyone has them, then please feel free to share.
I asked the question of promotion to Consett AFC, in the aftermath of their FA Cup defeat to the higher placed Bradford PA. The response from Consett was standard -
But, seeing the facilities they have up there and knowing they make money by hiring out their pitch to youth leagues - hopefully a good league position, is matched up by the state of the accounts.
I would love teams to take up the promotion offer. I am sure players would too!
Shildon have stated they have declined the offer of taking promotion to the EvoStik First Division North, even if they win the Northern League.
Apparently it is down to the 'three year plan' and them only being half way through it.
quotes from Shildon include:
David Dent: We are only half way through our Three Year Growth Plan and despite some fantastic improvements both on and off the field we believe that the time is not right to make the step up through the leagues. A decision on our ground will not be made until the 21st December and whether we stay at Dean Street or leave, improvements would have to be made to support our progression to Step 4
Gary Forrest: When I came to Shildon I managed a team, I now manage a club and our focus this and next season has to be in laying the foundations through supporting our Under 18's, arguably the best in the north east to progress to be our Reserves next season with the very best of them joining our first team squad
I wonder how many of the players would be looking to make the step up?
